As an artist and social scientist, my images draw attention to the inherent tension between man and the space he inhabits. Urban landscapes are viewed through the camera’s lens as painterly images of color and texture emerging from the darkness of abandoned buildings and long forgotten spaces. Light seeps through narrow openings bringing color and texture to the stage created by the effects of entropy and decay. This becomes the palette for my photographs.
The walls of once thriving industrial environments become the canvas for local graffiti artists and playgrounds for paint ball warriors who compete to create and transform the space from those before them, each leaving their “tags” upon the walls. Vicariously, I share the adventure and sometime danger of exploring these abandoned sites, documenting and bringing my own interpretations of the space into focus.
Alternatively, my photographs reveal mans’ conflicting relationship with the natural environment, depicting changing shore lines and open spaces, relying on the varying effects of the sun’s rays upon the day.
In spite of the availability of technical advancements of digital photography, I prefer working with a large format view camera, which offers me a more personal connection with the subject and available light. I primarily use a 4/5 and 6/12 format.
